Little concerned at having seen a murder in Victoria Station, Heron and Quin, 'two gentlemen of imponderable worth' in need of a roof, food and affection, trudge north to visit Dorrie. In their rivalry for her favours Quin, thinking he must prove his worth, sets out to find them food. He adventures from pub to bench, to contemplate the end of twilight. A fitful night at Dorrie's follows.
